Two ways to measure
Which method should I use?
Using an angle
Best when you can stand back and see the top of the tree clearly. Walk away from the trunk, measure how far you are, then use a level app on your phone to read the angle up to the top. We add your eye height to get the full height.
Using shadows
Best on a clear sunny day when the shadows are sharp. Measure your own shadow and the tree's shadow at the same moment. The tree is taller than you by the same amount its shadow is longer than yours.

How accurate is it?
Close enough to get a good idea, usually within about a metre or two on a normal garden tree. Sloping ground, a leaning tree or a hard-to-see top will throw it out a bit.
Why do I need to know the height?
The height tells us how much room there is to work, what equipment is needed and how long a job will take. It is one of the first things we ask for a quote.
Do I need to measure my tree before I call?
No. A rough guess is fine and we always look at the tree in person before giving a final price. This just saves you a bit of guessing.
